UAP Insurance Company was started in the 1920s as a subsidiary of Provincial Insurance Company with the name Provincial Insurance Company of East Africa. Provincial Insurance Company was based in London, UK. In 1994, a merger between Union des Assurance de Paris (UAP) of France and the Provincial of UK lead to the formation of UAP Insurance Company in Kenya. In the year 1996, the companies became AXA when AXA acquired UAP in France. AXA divested its shareholding in 2000 and it became a wholly owned Kenyan company.
UAP holdings went into Uganda in 2005, South Sudan 2006, Rwanda and DRC in 2011 and Tanzania 2013.
In January 2015, Centum and Kenyan businessman Chris Kirubi announced that they had agreed with Old mutual for a sale of 13.75% and 9.58% of their stake of UAP Holdings to Old Mutual at the cost of 7 Billion shillings. In the same month, Old mutual acquired 37.33% of UAP Holdings stock previously owned by Abraaj, Africinvest and Swedfund for 14.2B shillings raising the Old Mutual Holdings to 60.66%
UAP Insurance Kenya is a general insurance underwriter doing insurance business for private, SME and corporate clients. In addition, it is also one of the top 5 medical insurance providers in Kenya with annual premiums of KSh 3.8 billions., It has one of the most comprehensive medical insurance covers in the market, catering for various segments including juniors, economy, high end, seniors, individuals and families.
